Program Description:

Led by Doug Cooper and Mareike Lee, this 3 credit hour course will be offered as SA200:  Intermediate Studio.

This course is:

•A three-week long studio drawing course in urban sketching.
•Gain a better understanding of cities.
•Improve your ability to draw, interpret and represent them.
•Students at any level of drawing experience are welcome!

How do we perceive cities, and how do we know them? We see our immediate
urban surroundings, but, as we come to know a city better, we also qualify
what we see nearby with our growing knowledge of that city as a whole.
For the first two weeks, we’ll use freehand drawing to study Berlin’s buildings,
plazas, and infrastructure. However, recognizing that seeing and knowing are
distinctly different and complementary ways of experiencing a city, each day
we’ll couple an element of sketching what we see with mapping what we
know. In the final week, we’ll assemble this work into bound books that will
provide a theoretical and visual summary of what we’ve learned about Berlin.
