Program Overview

Your Sustainable Smart Cities program in Seoul lasts a full semester and provides an in-depth look at how South Korea's capital is using innovative urban design solutions to prepare for the future. You will enroll in at least one sustainability course that explores how urban planning, technology, and public policy contribute to sustainability in Seoul while also enrolling in your choice of business, communications, STEM, language, and other courses. This program offers a wide range of CIEE courses, host institution courses, and courses taught online through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Enhance your experience with co-curricular and extracurricular activities related to sustainability. Live and learn in Seoul!

We strive to accommodate your preferences by offering double rooms both on and off campus, while single rooms are available off campus only. ?All housing options are in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, convenience stores, and eateries.??

Program Highlights

  • Featured Courses: Choose from a set of related courses that explore how innovative cities utilize digital technologies and modern strategies to prepare for the future and impact the environment.
  • Sustainability in Practice Workshop: Take part in an optional workshop to compare different models of sustainability in your host country and around the world. Topics may include business, public policy, technology, waste-management, and more.
  • Immersive Experiences: Participate in networking events with local sustainability initiatives, activities that address how urban planning and technology can help lessen the impact on the environment, meaningful volunteer work with local organizations, and study tours to meet local changemakers and companies driving sustainability efforts.
  • Academic Projects: Enroll in a for-credit internship, directed independent research project, or service-learning to develop integrated sustainable solutions that address economic, social, and environmental challenges.

Activities

CIEE's excursions and cultural activities in Seoul will open doors for you to explore South Korea's rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.

  • Explore Seoul Forest, a green park with eco-friendly water systems and smart forest management
  • Visit Songdo International Business District, a sustainable city outside Seoul with energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy systems, and smart homes
  • Stroll along the Han River and have a picnic with fellow university students

Please note: Activities are based on past programs and subject to change at CIEE's discretion to adapt to local circumstances and participant feedback. Our goal when arranging activities is always to enhance your experience.

Academics

CIEE Seoul:?Study in the heart of downtown Seoul in Jonggak, just steps from Jonggak Station (Line 1, Exit 10). The CIEE Center features cozy lounges, quiet study spaces, and fast Wi-Fi, with cafés, restaurants, shops, and cultural landmarks just around the corner. With easy access to public transportation and nonstop city energy, Jonggak is the perfect home base while abroad.

Hanyang University:?Founded originally as an engineering college, Hanyang has developed into a powerhouse of innovation, with a huge variety of facilities for students to create media, work with transformative technologies, and connect with students and faculty across a broad range of disciplines. Located in the very heart of Seoul, near the Han River and a quick bus or subway trip to most parts of the city, Hanyang offers students an exceptional academic experience.

Arizona State University (ASU):?Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.
