This interdisciplinary course offers an overview of current topics and trends in international human trafficking, with sharply increased levels post-COVID19 pandemic surpassing pre-pandemic levels exacerbated by conflicts, climate disasters and displacement, making human trafficking one of the most pressing global human rights issues of the 21st century. Students will explore the causes, mechanisms, and consequences of human trafficking across borders, with an emphasis on women and girls which account for the largest share of victims globally and emerging trends of forced labor trafficking (surpassing sex trafficking as a form of exploitation in 2024.)
Through case studies, academic research, survivor testimonies, and legal frameworks, the course critically analyzes different forms of trafficking and the diverse populations affected. Special attention is given to the role of globalization and technology in shaping trafficking networks.
Students will engage with international conventions such as the Palermo Protocol, evaluate the effectiveness of law enforcement and NGO responses, and explore ethical dilemmas and advocacy strategies. Guest speakers, interactive simulations, and policy analysis projects will challenge students to think critically about solutions and prevention strategies in a complex and evolving global landscape.
